Yoga Takes You Higher
Gemini (May 20 - June 21)
Unite your Sun and Moon energies, ignite your spark of genius, and let your spirit soar!
The Egyptian symbol of Gemini was a woman and man holding hands. In Sanskrit they were called Maithuna, the lovers. The symbol of the twins corresponds with a central tenet of yoga philosophy, which is the idea of uniting complimentary opposites, such as : Sun and Moon, masculine and feminine, night and day, dark and light, action and rest, stillness and movement, Earth and Heaven. In the Gemini-inspired practice, in the Yoga by the Stars book, we explore duality by integrating sun and moon imagery into our practice.
Gemini is ruled by the planet Mercury, the swift messenger of the gods. Air is the element associated with Gemini, which fits in perfectly with the imagery of Mercury's winged feet and helmet which we use in the Gemini yoga practice in the book. It's fun and exhilarating to perform yoga poses whilst imagining that you have wings. The winged power of Mercury lifts you higher; you overcome obstacles and feel that anything is possible. You find yourself achieving poses that were previously beyond your grasp.
Sunlight and shadow are integral aspects of our yoga practice. Yoga philosophy tells us that we can find the Sun, the Moon, the planets, and all the stars within our own body. The sun in the belly, and the moon above the crown of the head. Prana manifests within the subtle body as both sun and moon energies. The spine is the Tree of Life with on one side the sun, and the moon on the other. Our yoga practice bring these two energies together, and heaven and earth are reunited.
